Do you suffer from disturbing cramps in the stomach, diarrhea or bloating? Do you need to go to the bathroom immediately after eating some foods?
Bowel diseases affect millions of people all over the world every year, but the cause may not be related to irritable bowel syndrome or lactose allergy.
Dr. Dan Baumgardt, a lecturer in physiology, pharmaceutical and neuroscience from the British University of Bristol, told the British Daily Mail that it is possible that an unfamiliar parasite called Hookworms moves inside your intestine causing these symptoms.
What is the hookworm infection?
Categor worms belong to a type of worm called threaded worms, which are of parasites, and this means that they live and feed on other living organisms.
Categor worms affect the lungs, skin and small intestine. Humans are infected with the hooks through their larvae in the dust polluted with stools.
How does a person develop hookworms?
The adult hook worms live in the intestine of the affected dogs and cats, so their stools sometimes contain hookworm eggs. If a person walks on that polluted soil with stool, sat on it or touched it, the larvae can dig into the skin.
This often happens in the position of the feet, buttocks, thighs and hands, and worms can enter the body through any part covered by the skin, but it is not contagious and cannot be transmitted from one person to another.
Dr. Bumgardt indicated that the rash is a major feature of hookworm infection, which can occur as soon as the drilling begins across the skin. When the hook larvae – small worms that have not yet slept to become a severe dedema – are under the skin, the immune system in the body responds to, causing swollen red lines and winding -like lines, this condition is known as Cutaneous Larva Migrans.
The presence of small white worms in the stool, which looks like pieces of threads, is another sign of infection.
Category Worms affect about 470 million people worldwide, and because they prefer a warm climate, the infection is especially spread in tropical regions, such as the Caribbean Sea region, Southeast Asia, Africa and parts of the southeastern United States.

There are other types of worms that may cause annoying intestinal symptoms, such as threadworms. “Nearly half of the children under the age of ten in addition to many adults of the thinworms, often do not realize this because the infection usually does not cause any symptoms at all. However, in some cases these worms can show many other symptoms, such as night irritation and involuntary urination,” says Dr. Bumgardt.
“Because worms prefer to live in the intestine, it has caused rare cases of abdominal pain and symptoms similar to appendicitis. In some cases, when the appendix is removed, it turns out to be full of worms,” he added.
He explained that inflammation in the small intestine caused by infection can lead to abdominal pain and diarrhea, and can also hinder the absorption of proteins and iron, which in turn causes anemia.
Iron deficiency in the body is caused by anemia, and this occurs when the body does not produce enough healthy red blood cells needed to transport oxygen to all parts of the body, which causes symptoms of yellowing of the skin, feeling dizziness and even depression.
Paomgardt pointed out that the intestine is not the only place where the bloodwides are moving, as the respiratory system is also an appropriate place for the presence of parasitic worms, which causes coughing and the sound of the whistle.
Mebendazole is an anti -worm drug and is taken orally, and does not need a prescription, and is recommended to treat the injured over the age of two, to prevent any other spread of infection.
How to prevent hintworm infection?
You can reduce the risk of hooks through:
- Wearing shoes when walking outside, especially in areas where the soil may be contaminated with stools.
- Drink clean water.
- Clean food and cooked well.
- Washing hands in a correct way.
Dr. Bumgardt pointed out that cleaning measures are important to help eliminate infection and prevent its spread, especially among those who cannot take the medicine. This includes washing the hands well and washing clothes carefully and avoiding scratching the affected areas, and it is also good to trim the nails to prevent eggs from gathering under them.
