An injection twice a year is an alternative to high blood pressure medications

A new study revealed the possibility of making a qualitative shift in the treatment of high blood pressure, by taking an injection that is given only twice a year instead of taking medications daily.

This technology is based on an experimental drug known as zilebesiran, which has shown a clear ability to lower blood pressure further when used alongside conventional treatments.

The clinical trial included hundreds of patients whose blood pressure was not under control despite the use of usual medications, and the results showed that adding this injection contributed to significantly improving blood pressure control compared to traditional treatment alone.

How does zilpiciran work?

Zilpiciran is an experimental drug that uses RNA interference to lower blood pressure.

The drug works by inhibiting the production of a protein in the liver called angiotensinogen, which plays a key role in regulating blood pressure.

By reducing levels of this protein, blood vessels are able to relax, leading to lower blood pressure. The treatment is given as an injection under the skin.

The researchers believe that this long-acting approach may make it easier for patients to adhere to treatment, especially since high blood pressure is one of the most prominent causes of heart attacks and strokes globally.

Studies are still ongoing to evaluate its long-term effectiveness and its ability to reduce serious complications.
