Civil Aviation: Activating air traffic management over international waters next March

The General Civil Aviation Authority revealed the completion of equipping the Qatar Air Traffic Control Center in line with the operational requirements of the Doha Flight Information Region, in preparation for activating the second phase of air traffic management over international waters, expected in March of next year.
Ms. Fatima Hamad Al-Marri, Deputy Project Manager of the Qatar Air Traffic Control Center, said during her participation in the “Sabah Rabah” program on Al Rayyan TV that the preparation of the Qatar Air Traffic Control Center was done in cooperation between the Air Navigation Department of the General Civil Aviation Authority and both the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to ensure the efficiency and safety of aviation and adherence to all international standards in this regard.
Al Marri added that the radar control operations room in the center building has been equipped with radar screens, navigation information display devices and advanced communication systems, to display accurate data on air traffic in the Doha Flight Information Region and ensure effective communication between air traffic controllers and aircraft crossing the airspace, which represents a new step in the field of enhancing operational processes with all efficiency and accuracy.
The Deputy Project Manager of the Qatar Air Traffic Control Center pointed out that air traffic controllers are trained through advanced simulation programs to ensure their readiness to deal with various weather scenarios and operational challenges in the Doha region, including emergencies, in addition to providing and qualifying additional numbers of qualified air traffic controllers and technicians to meet the requirements of the second phase. The Qatar Air Traffic Control Center is an integral part of the civil aviation system in the State of Qatar, and it plays a pivotal and essential role in ensuring the safety and smooth flow of aircraft movement to and from the State of Qatar.
The preparation of the radar control operations room in the center building reflects the prominent role of the General Civil Aviation Authority in the aviation industry in the State of Qatar, and an important stage among the many stages through which the Authority aims to achieve more accomplishments related to the field of civil aviation, keep pace with all developments and changes, and enhance the position of the State of Qatar in this field at the global level.
It is worth noting that the General Civil Aviation Authority has recently launched the long-range radar “L-BAND” and the medium-range radar “S-BAND” as part of the measures it has taken to achieve the main strategic objectives of the Doha Flight Information Region (DFIR), to enhance air traffic control in Qatari airspace, and early detection of air traffic within the region.
