An American study revealed that listening to various types of music accelerates recovery after surgery and reduces the patient’s need to take painkillers.

The study, conducted at North State University School of Medicine in California, showed that patients who listen to music after surgery need half the amount of morphine anesthetic needed by patients who do not listen to music to relieve their pain.

Dr. Aldo Frezza, a surgical specialist at the university, says: “When patients wake up after surgery, they sometimes feel frightened and have no sense of place, but music reduces the feeling of anxiety in the transitional stage after awakening until the patient returns to his normal state, and it can also reduce the feeling of tension at this stage.” .

Within the framework of the new study, the researchers analyzed the results obtained during 35 previous experiments on music therapy, especially the effect of music on surgical patients. This data showed that music has a significant impact on reducing pain and tension on the day following surgery.

The Health Day website quoted medical student Shahzab Rais from North State University as saying: “When you listen to music, you disconnect from reality and have a feeling of relaxation. This way, the focus on pain is reduced, and the patient can calm himself.”

Researchers say that listening to music reduces the heart rate. This aids recovery by improving the blood circulation’s ability to transport oxygen and nutrients within the body.
