The Consumer Advice Center in the German state of Bavaria said that barley represents a healthier alternative than rice, as barley is significantly superior to rice in terms of dietary fiber.
The center explained that white rice contains about 1.5 grams per 100 grams, and pearl barley contains about three times the amount, 4.6 grams, and even barley flakes may contain more than 10 grams of fiber per 100 grams.
Benefit of dietary fiber
Eating plenty of fiber regularly in our diet is beneficial for our bodies for several reasons:
- Thanks to fiber, we feel full longer.
- Dietary fiber improves digestion because it stimulates bowel activity, which helps prevent constipation.
- Dietary fiber reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and colon cancer.
- Barley contains a relatively high amount of beta-glucan, which is a soluble fiber that positively affects cholesterol levels. It is also found in oats, for example.
What can you prepare with barley?
The taste of malt is described as nutty and slightly sweet. Here are some ways to try these pills:
- Pearl barley: is hulled and polished barley grains, which can be used like rice. Risotto can also be cooked with it, and it can also be added to soup.
- Barley flakes: can be added to your morning muesli.
- Barley flour: Ground barley can be used to prepare bread. Mixing barley with wheat flour, for example, is necessary, otherwise the bread will not rise.
